On this date in history, the first President of the United States, George Washington was born in Westmoreland County in Virginia in 1732. He would grow up to become a surveyor, farmer, military man, president and the most revered man in the colonies. Through it all he was not only concerned with his reputation but he was also a genuine man who cared deeply about the people and nation around him. Our country is very lucky to have had such a man lead us through the despairing years of the revolution and the early years of our country under the Constitution. King George II said upon learning that Washington had resigned his commission and was returning to his farm rather than assume control of the country: “If he does that,” the incredulous monarch said, “he will be the greatest man in the world.”
Indeed he was and maybe the greatest man in history.
