Earlier today we learned that Obama was going to make the recess appointment of Richard Cordray to head up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. However such an appointment is subject to a legal challenge because the Senate has never gone into an official recess. Currently the Senate is in a pro-forma session, which was actually started by Democrats during George W. Bush’s terms, where a lawmaker gave in an out of session every 3 days. This prevents a President from making any recess appointments because there is no recess.
President Obama claims he is doing this for the American people by saying: “But when Congress refuses to act in a way that hurts our economy and puts people at risk, I have an obligation as President to do what I can without them. I have an obligation to act on behalf of the American people. I will not stand by while a minority in the Senate puts party ideology ahead of the people they were elected to serve. Not when so much is at stake. Not at this make-or-break moment for the middle class.” In fact he is doing this to make an unprecedented power grab as he tries to desperately hold onto his office by claiming to be looking out for the middle class.
This is laughable because if he were truly looking out for the American people he would not be playing the class warfare card, would not be spending excessive amounts of money, would not be supporting unemployment extensions. would not be working to stop the Keystone pipe line – that could employ at least 25,000 and according to some reports up to 200,000 people as well as lower our energy cost. He would not be supporting Stimulus bills that do not stimulate or Healthcare bills that will decrease the quality of life not increase it. He would not be presenting budgets that exceed our revenue.
And finally he would not be supporting another bloated federal bureaucracy aimed at “protecting” the American people from predatory lenders. Americans need to take responsibility for their own financial decisions not let a bloated federal bureaucracy make those decisions for them. We all make mistakes in handling our finances because we tried to take a shortcut or spent more than we had or went down the wrong avenue for help. Instead of being a learning opportunity, we now have a government who has to monitor everything and everyone – is that freedom and liberty? Will this agency really protect American people or is it just another power grab and a reason for Americans to be irresponsible. I say the later and that will cost us dearly not only in taxes but in our freedom and liberty and ability to do business. Not all of these institutions that they claim are bad, are bad but all have now been smeared because we have a President who believes he is the Supreme Leader of America and that Americans cannot take responsibility for themselves so he has to take that responsibility and care for us.
What a sad day for America and if the Congress had any gumption at all, they would take this sorry excuse for a President to court as well the House needs to file impeachment charges because he is circumventing the Constitution. We have a Constitutional crisis and the question now is how will the Republicans in the House and Senate deal with it.
